Gillian Kogan, Artist

I am an artist who trained as mature student after getting married and having three children.  I have always painted and drawn and attended part-time courses.  As the children got bigger I decided to study full time.

After graduating, I supplemented my degree with an intensive drawing course.

The influences on my work have come from many artists especially Cezanne,  Bonnard, Leon Kossoff, Sidney Nolan and the  American printmaker and draughtsman Jim Dine.

A course run by artist and printmaker Eileen Cooper, which emphasised memory and imagination, inspired me to create images of memories particularly those that relate to my childhood during World War II.

I am also interested in myth and legend and am attempting to find images that express ancient stories in today's terms.

Monoprint with mixed media is my preferred medium, and all my recent work is on paper.

My work has been included two years running in the Royal Academy of Arts, London, Summer Exhibition. In 2012 Pathé Newsreel - Troops going into Belsen - 1945, and in 2013 Evacuees at the Prep School.

In June 2013 I was interviewed by Jay Silber for a video made by Vicki Hollet. Watch it here.
